I think my PAYE tax code is wrong — how can I check or change it?

Your PAYE code determines how much income tax is deducted from your salary or pension. If your circumstances change, your PAYE code may not always update automatically, or may be based on outdated information.
The quickest way to review or update your PAYE code is usually through your HMRC Personal Tax Account. From there, you can:
check your current and future tax codes;
update HMRC with changes to your expected employment income;
add or remove taxable benefits, such as private medical insurance or a company car;
notify HMRC of changes to pension contributions or other relevant information.
If you have complex tax affairs — for example, foreign income, rental properties, company benefits, or multiple sources of PAYE income — it may be worth taking professional advice before changing your tax code and also discussing whether entering Self-Assessment is more appropriate for you.
